Tiel Seivl-Keevers is a Kenmore-based artist who has exhibited her art all over Australia and even overseas.

As she also studied and taught arts and graphic design, it’s fair to say she knows a fair bit about art.

Today, we speak to Tiel about picking the perfect artwork for your home.

Art Should Evoke Emotion

Art should make you feel something, and Tiel says that the emotions it evokes do not need to be positive.

If a piece of art doesn’t evoke emotion, it is not the true experience and you probably won’t keep it in your home forever.

These feeling may come from the colour or the textures or the subject matter.

Choose a subject matter that sings to you

Speaking of subject matter, Tiel says she loves artwork with a nature feel that reminds her of Australia.

But she doesn’t always keep the art in her home on the same walls, and likes to move them around frequently.

Whether you’re interested in vases of flowers, people or impressionist work, find a subject matter that, as above, evokes emotion for you.

Does it tell a story?

Tiel says the perfect piece of art can have a story behind it.

It may be that you purchased it on an overseas trip or that it reminds your first date with your partner. Whatever the reason, some of your favourite works of art will have a story which you might want to share with those who enter your home.

It will make your space your own.
