Inside one of Brisbane’s most iconic Art Deco buildings

Sitting proudly amongst a landscape of sleek skyscrapers in one of South Brisbane’s most vibrant enclaves, 185 Vulture Street has undoubtedly caught the attention of many passing by.

Greeting pedestrians with a stucco 1930s facade, manicured gardens and a classic geometric entry gate, the Art Deco building is hard to miss. It’s this undeniable street appeal, coupled with treasured family memories and a passion for eclectic design, that lead two local brothers to transform a once tired complex into a true inner-city icon.

With a background in construction and design, brothers Shaun and Shane Costa knew they had discovered a rare gem when walking along Vulture Street over 10 years ago. “Although it was quite rundown, the stucco facade grabbed my attention,” says Shaun. “The building is set on a hill and showcases magnificent Spanish architecture. Even then, it looked like something out of a film.”

Combining Shaun’s creative skills with his brother’s craftsmanship, the two teamed up to transform the historic boarding house into boutique short- and long-stay accommodation with classic flair. “Every inch of the property has been touched up after years of neglect,” explains Shaun. “We pulled inspiration from my favourite designer, Catherine Martin, and her eclectic collection of luxurious textiles and wallpapers – all of which have a sophisticated Art Deco edge.”

The attention provided by the Costa brothers is evident in each of the complex’s private and communal rooms. Adding original light fittings sourced from Europe and New York, the two also carefully selected each piece of furniture to complement the building’s glamorous aesthetic. Details such as parquetry timber floors, ornate plasterwork, stone fireplaces and decorative tilework also promise to enchant all who step through its grand doors.

At the heart of the renovation was a love for the brothers’ grandmother, whose name served as inspiration for the boutique hotel. “Shane and myself have put so much care into establishing Betty Joan Apartments and giving it the romanticism of the old world,” says Shaun. “The inspiration has been drawn from our childhood in Africa, where we created so many happy memories with our grandmother amongst her magnificent gardens and on her amazing property. From the smells to the exotic romance of its flora and fauna, that time of our lives was truly magical.”

Perfectly balancing the charm of yesteryear with the functionality and luxuries of today, the building now encompasses eight reimagined apartments. Accompanied by an elegant reception area and leafy courtyards, these exquisite residences are now available for sale with Place New Farm’s Aaron Woolard. “It’s such a unique property that presents an unmissable opportunity for both investors and those looking for a landmark South Brisbane address,” says Aaron.

Having had many incredible experiences at 185 Vulture Street, the brothers say they are grateful for helping to write the building’s next chapter. “I love seeing people walking by with their animals and smile at the place,” says Shaun. “Something inside me says that we made a difference for the better.”
