A wonderful artwork can add a whole other element to your home – it can become a talking point at dinner parties and can be a great lifetime investment.

Design, Renovate, Build like a Pro is an event coming to Mitchell Fine Art Gallery in Brisbane, which focuses on educating homeowners on making the best decisions when making over their homes.

One of these major decisions can be selecting the perfect piece of art to adorn your walls, which can often be tricky to do!

“Buying an artwork for the first time can sometimes feel a little daunting and we find that people can feel hesitant and unsure about what they should buy,” says Gallery manager, Sharon Mitchell.

With over 20 years’ experience and knowledge in the art industry, Sharon has given us four handy tips on what to remember when you’re selecting your next artwork.

How did you become involved with the ‘Design, Renovate, Build Like a Pro’ event?

I’m involved in a networking group with Adriana Summers who is organising the ‘Design, Renovate, Build Like a Pro’ event and she approached us to use the space.

A lot of what we do here at Mitchell Fine Art has an education aspect and we want people to feel welcome in the gallery space.

We find that people can often feel intimidated going into a gallery as they don’t feel that they have enough knowledge, so we hold events to help people grow this knowledge.

We’re very lucky, we get to work in this environment every day and with over 20 years’ experience our knowledge of art is quite in depth and we like share that and pass on to others why we love what we do.

We held an event in the gallery earlier this year which was a discussion on interior design and the aesthetics of art in the home.

This event had a panel with a local interior designer and architect who gave tips for renovating your home, so in lead on from that event we are pleased to be hosting ‘Design, Renovate, Build like a Pro.

Tell us a bit about the collection you’re presenting in the gallery at the moment?

At the moment we have the beautiful ‘Island of Misfits’ collection by Steve Lopes who is a figurative landscape Sydney based artist.

The works we have on display here are painted on site at the location from around New Zealand.

As well as Steve’s works, we also have a few pieces from Bernard Ollis’ ‘Observations’ collection which was presented last month, and also a piece from next month’s indigenous exhibition.

There has always a variety of works to see when you come in.

You have the opportunity to see what has been on, what’s on currently and what’s to come.
