Located in the centre of trendy Newstead, the Commercial Road Antiques & Decorative Arts Centre holds second-hand treasures sourced far and wide.

Built into 1000 square meters below the iconic Woolstores, Commercial Road Antiques will take you on a journey through their maze of retro clothes, dinner sets, collectable knickknacks and timeless pieces of furniture.

Having always had a love for collecting interesting items, owner of the centre, Ian Thomson, shares what he loves about the store and gives some handy tips on how to find the perfect piece to suit you.

Tell us about some of the changes you’ve seen in the area?

Over the years that the store has been open, it has witnessed some dramatic changes in Newstead.

We have a whole new clientele who come in and tell us that they had no idea how big the space is, and they come back over and over to go on treasure hunts.

It’s very exciting.

Initially our clients were established as elder folk with a love for finding pieces they remember from their childhood.

Now, we have a much younger crowd come through the doors and you see them get excited and blown away by the ‘old school’ pieces they come across.

We had a young family come in the other day, their son had never seen a dial phone and it was great to watch his father show him how it worked.

I enjoy seeing our customers get excited about objects that us older phone take for granted.
