Guide to creating a functional bathroom in your home

Creating a functional bathroom can be a great investment for both your home and your well-being.

Looking to renovate your bathroom? Here are five steps to help you create a bathroom that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing.

Step 1: Plan your space

Before you start shopping for fixtures or tiles, it’s important to plan your space. Measure your bathroom and consider the size, layout and location of windows, doors and other important features. Think about what you need in your bathroom, including storage, shower or bathtub, sink, toilet, and any other features that you would like to include.

Step 2: Choose the right fixtures

Fixtures are the backbone of any bathroom, and choosing the right ones is crucial to creating a functional space. Consider your needs and budget when choosing fixtures, and look for ones that are durable, water-efficient, and easy to clean. If you have a small bathroom, consider a pedestal sink or a wall-mounted sink to save space.

This year, fixtures are also in the spotlight when it comes to design. Popular in master ensuites and guest bathrooms, softened metallics like brushed or champagne gold are on the rise and designers are encouraging mixing metals to create a warm and unique space.

Step 3: Add storage

Bathrooms can often be cluttered, and it’s important to add enough storage to keep everything organised. Consider adding a medicine cabinet, shelving, or a vanity with storage to keep all your essentials within reach.

It’s also important to put the right storage solutions in the right bathroom. In your ensuite, you may want more drawers to accommodate your everyday items, but in the guest bathroom, you may want to include more towel racks and shelving to accommodate for guest towels and toiletry items. Consider how you plan to utilise your space and pick your storage solutions from there.

Step 4: Select the right flooring

Flooring is one of the most important aspects of your bathroom. Consider the look you want to achieve, as well as the durability and maintenance requirements of the flooring. Options like tile, stone, and laminate flooring are popular choices for bathrooms due to their moisture resistance and durability. Marble is a designer's flooring pick for 2023, read more about the different types of marble that are receiving a lot of praise here.

Step 5: Choose the right lighting

Good lighting is essential in a bathroom, and there are several options to choose from. Consider adding overhead lighting, as well as task lighting (lighting that provides increased light for a particular task) such as sconces or light above the mirror. Strip lights, particularly under cabinets and behind mirrors, are also fantastic in bathrooms as they take up minimal space and create an ambient atmosphere.

By following these five steps, you can create a functional bathroom that meets your needs and enhances your home. Remember to consider your budget and consult a professional if you have any questions or concerns about your bathroom renovation. With the right planning and attention to detail, you can create a beautiful and functional bathroom that you will enjoy for years to come.
