Did you know, 67.3% of residents in Fortitude Valley are aged between 20 and 39 years old? That’s double the state average! What is it about this suburb that’s leading millennials to live in this inner city location compared to others?

For the large percentage of residents who have never married (68%) and do not have children (73%), the ‘Valley’ offers an exciting and desirable lifestyle. Known as Brisbane’s entertainment and nightlife district, this area has an abundance of bars and restaurants that are buzzing every night of the week.

Local resident, Andrew Carrington, says this was a big selling point when choosing a place to live during his relocation from Cairns.

“The Valley has everything you need right at your fingertips. From my apartment I can easily walk to one of the many restaurants for dinner, or one of the local bars to catch up with a friend,” says Andrew.

“Compared to other places across the city, I chose Fortitude Valley for its great convenience, buzzy nature and lifestyle facilities,” he says.

Typically, the demographic of an area can often be reflected in the style of living. Specifically, in Fortitude Valley, 94% of living is apartments, with 75% rented. These dwellings are well suited to the suburbs demographic of young, professional singles and couples.

From the 6,978 people who live in Fortitude Valley, 65% work full-time in a profession. Another drawcard attracting Generation Y to this suburb is its proximity to the CBD.

Statewide, 71% of people use a car to get to work. However, in Fortitude Valley this number is reduced by more than half. Less than two kilometres from the CBD, almost a third of residents chose to walk to work (compared to the average of 3%) and 21% engage daily in the array of public transport services available.

“Having recently relocated to Brisbane, I was able to make the transition without needing a car,” says Andrew.

“From my apartment, I can walk down to nearby Ann Street and get on a bus that takes me directly to work in the city. Other days I will ride my bike,” he says.

With a cosmopolitan lifestyle, close proximity to the business district and dwellings reflective of the demographic, Fortitude Valley seems to tick many boxes for the modern day, young professional.
