From choosing the perfect tiling to the ultimate shower head, there’s a lot that goes into bathroom design.

The professionals at Highgrove Bathrooms are here to help - providing four useful tips to consider when developing the design of your bathroom.

Manager of their Fortitude Valley showroom, Nick Coubrough, talks us through everything from choosing colour schemes, to designing your bathroom according to usability.

Check out their go-to tips below.

1. Identify waste location

The ‘waste’ in your bathroom is your pipes, drainage and plumbing.

Many bathrooms have concrete slabs throughout where waste may not be able to be used.

Waste for vanities goes into the floor. These may be moved back into your wall, or have your wall packed out requiring a floor mounted vanity to cover the waste.

The location may also affect the size, orientation and placement of baths and showers when designing your floor plan. Identifying waste positions and their movability reduces time waste on redesigning.

Toilets also have a ‘set out’ which may be of a particular size and location, being either a ‘P’ or ‘S’ trap. Take photos of your toilet, showing the waste outlet and water inlet when shopping and the store assistant can help you pick the right toilet for your bathroom.

2. Pick a shape

Pick a round or square shape when designing your bathroom. Square will be more modern, round will be more traditional.

Keep this theme when picking remaining items such as taps, basins, mirrors and handles. Maintaining this theme will help tie your bathroom together and will reduce options when choosing products to suit your design.

3. Choose a colour scheme

Keep your bathroom colour scheme monochromatic. Heavy on the whites, medium on the grey and sparingly on black.

Bring colour into your bathroom using soft furnishings, plants and coloured accessories which can be changed with your mood and season.

4. Do a running dialogue when using your bathroom

Creating your bathroom for usability is key to the design.

Before shopping, do a running dialogue on how you will use the bathroom. Consider where you will put your clothes, towels, size of bottles, number of power outlets needed etc.

This can ensure that the sizing is adequate for your needs and prevents clutter later when the bathroom has been built.
