The next act is about to begin for one of Clayfield's most recognisable landmark buildings, with The Abbey at 223 Bonney Avenue hitting the market for the first time in almost 20 years.
Originally built in the 1920s as a community hall, the building has also been a theatre, artists' space and creative hub before being transformed into one of Brisbane's most distinctive homes.
Behind its landmark façade is an extraordinary residence, with the flexibility to also suit a boutique office, creative studio or professional workspace.
Owners Jennifer St George and her husband bought the property in 2007, drawn to its history, architecture and one-of-a-kind feel.
"We've always loved heritage buildings, but this one was different," Jennifer St George said.
"The moment we walked in, we knew it was the one. The light is beautiful all day, the ceilings are incredible and there's just a feeling about the place that you can't explain."
Original features including the stage, pulpit and mezzanine remain today, preserving reminders of the building's colourful past as a community gathering place.
"It's one of those buildings that has so much personality," Jennifer said.
"You can still see parts of its history everywhere you look, but at the same time it feels incredibly warm and liveable. We feel lucky to have looked after it for so many years."
The family now lives in northern New South Wales and after almost 20 years of ownership, Jennifer said it was time to pass the landmark on to its next custodians.
"We've loved being part of its story and now it's someone else's turn to enjoy it. Buildings like this deserve to keep creating memories."
Selling agent, Place Ascot’s Drew Davies, said opportunities like The Abbey were incredibly hard to come by.
"You can build a new home, but you can't build history,” Drew said.
"People are always looking for homes with character, but this is on another level. It's a genuine Brisbane landmark that has evolved over more than a century and still feels incredibly special today."
Set on a 418sqm block just seven kilometres from Brisbane's CBD, The Abbey features soaring cathedral ceilings, expansive open-plan living, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a mezzanine, entertaining deck and saltwater pool.
The property will go to auction on-site on Saturday, July 18.
