Why Care, Effort and a Monumental Good Attitude Will Beat Talent Every Day of the Week

Friday May 30, 2025 ● By Amy Wolter // Head of People & HR

Let’s be honest, talent is great. It’s shiny, impressive, and often fast-tracked for opportunity. But in any successful workplace, ask a leader who they’d back when the chips are down: a high performing "natural" or the person who consistently shows up, gives a damn, and brings a can-do attitude. Spoiler alert: it’s the latter. Every time.

In today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world of work, the true differentiator isn’t talent; it’s care, effort, and attitude.

Why This Matters (More Than Ever)?

While technical skills and experience will always have their place, they’re not what makes a team thrive long term. High care and effort signal something deeper … an investment, and its personal. It shows someone is all in, not just for their own role, but for the business, the team, the people, and the collective success.

A constructive attitude, even when things get hard (and they will), adds fuel to the culture engine. It encourages solutions, not just observations. It supports others rather than competing with them. And in a world where challenges can’t always be solved with skill alone, mindset becomes everything.

What Leaders Value

Ask any employer or leader what makes an employee stand out, and you’ll hear things like:

  • "They always follow through."
  • "They genuinely care about their work."
  • "They bring positivity even when it’s tough."
  • "They’re dependable and low drama."
  • “They get it done”
  • “They don’t give excuses”
  • "They look for how they can help, not why they shouldn’t have to."

You won’t hear: “They’re the most talented person on paper.” Because talent that coasts, complains, or avoids accountability has a short shelf life. High care and effort, on the other hand, is like compound interest.  It builds and builds.

It’s Contagious (in the Best Way)

Culture isn’t created in the boardroom. It’s shaped by the behaviours, the human doing of everyday people showing up and doing the little things right. When someone consistently brings effort, it raises the bar. Others notice. Teams lift. Expectations shift. And suddenly, the workplace just… works.

A constructive attitude doesn’t mean toxic positivity. It means bringing curiosity instead of criticism. It means looking for answers, not just identifying problems. It’s the stuff that gets remembered in performance reviews, team meetings, and conversations about promotion or succession planning.

Future-Proof Your Career

Let’s not sugarcoat it: no job is guaranteed – not mine, not yours. But being someone who consistently shows care, puts in effort, and brings a solid attitude? That’s a power move. It makes you adaptable, valuable, and remembered for all the right reasons.

In a business world obsessed with AI, automation, and speed, human skills like initiative, reliability, and team-first mindset are more prized than ever. They're harder to teach, harder to fake, and make all the difference when deciding who grows, who stays, and who gets the tap on the shoulder for bigger things.

Leaders Can Inspire It, But You Have to Choose It

Good leadership creates space for these behaviours to thrive, but no one can care for you. No one can put in effort on your behalf. And no one can fake a good attitude forever.

The choice to show up, give your best, and be the kind of teammate everyone wants around… and that choice is yours alone. And it might just be the single most important decision you make in your career.

So yes, talent’s nice. But effort, care, and a great attitude? That’s the real monumental magic.
