Brisbane Floods: What can I do to help?

Thursday March 3, 2022 ● By Grace Holgate // Place Estate Agents

Through times of destruction and hardship, the Brisbane community continues to show perseverance, strength, and local spirit.

Areas of Brisbane and surrounds have been devastated by floods with an estimate of up to 15,000 properties being affected.

Despite the challenges of these recent events, the people of Brisbane have come together to support their family, friends and neighbours in any way that they can.

Want to help Brisbane flood victims but not sure where to start? Here’s a few ways that you can get involved in helping the Brisbane community.

Donating Supplies

Families and local businesses across Brisbane are in need of personal and household items to help them get their lives back on track. It can be difficult to know what items are essential to those affected during challenging times and sometimes, you don’t know where to begin.

If you have goods or funds that you would like to donate, or would like to see what people need in the disaster affected communities, GIVIT is an excellent and reputable platform to donate through.

GIVIT is an online service that lets you see what is needed and urgently required in your community and connects you to trusted charities.

Items that need to be donated vary, but include essentials such as fuel vouchers, grocery vouchers, school uniforms and cleaning supplies.

Additional organisations seeking donations include the Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul Society Queensland (Vinnies) and Lifeline Queensland.

Assisting the Mud Army 2.0

Originally established during the Brisbane 2011 floods, the Mud Army is a volunteer initiative run by the Brisbane City Council that calls for any individual to sign up to help clean up Brisbane.

Partnering with Volunteering Queensland, the clean-up crew focus on specific locations across the city, helping residents and businesses inundated with floodwater.

Check-In

If you know anyone in the areas that have affected by the floods, check in on them and see if there is anything that they need.

Being there for a chat, sharing a meal with them or just being there to listen to their stories can go a long way.

List your home for temporary crisis accommodation

Many members of our community are without power or do not have access to safe washing or drinking water. If you have the means to share your home during this challenging time, flatmates.com.au are currently encouraging those that are able and eager, to list their spare room or home on the website through their Disaster Relief Emergency Accommodation program.
