How the Real Estate Industry is 'Counting Women In'

Friday March 8, 2024 ● By Rachel Sanft // Place Estate Agents

For International Women’s Day 2024, the United Nations presents the theme of Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress. With the goal of examining avenues for greater economic inclusion, we asked 5 women in different roles throughout the Place group to discuss the significance of this year’s theme for women in Real Estate. Here is what they had to say...

Michaela Peihopa Corporate Trainer-2

With the end goal being gender equality, do you feel that equal employment pathways and opportunities are accessible to women in real estate?

Amy: “Yes. Women AND men in real estate have made significant progress towards achieving equal employment pathways and opportunities. Many women are breaking barriers and excelling in various roles within the industry, demonstrating that talent and capability are not defined by gender. With ongoing support, mentorship, and advocacy, we can create an environment where women thrive and contribute fully to the real estate sector, ultimately leading to greater gender equality. I feel blessed to be part of an organisation that is extremely balanced in this regard.”

How can the real estate industry foster an environment for women to build their capabilities and strengthen their capacity to lead?

Amy: "The real estate industry can foster such an environment by implementing mentorship programs, providing equal opportunities for career advancement, offering flexible work arrangements, promoting diversity and inclusion, and addressing unconscious biases within the industry. Additionally, creating networking opportunities and supporting women-owned businesses can further empower women in the field. Encouraging established women to share their stories with our emerging talent is a true platform to inspire other women to flex their career imaginations."

Michaela P: To embrace diversity wholeheartedly. The industry should aim to continue to advocate for policies that champion equality, actively elevate women to leadership roles, and provide tailored mentorship with consideration to women in different circumstances such as mothers or carers, and training opportunities. By cultivating a culture that celebrates the unique strengths of women, we not only enhance their capabilities but also pave the way for them to lead with authenticity and resilience. Real estate is an excellent example of an industry where women often thrive, given the 'people' business it is.”

Why do you think it’s important to celebrate IWD?

Amy: "IWD highlights the achievements of women, raises awareness about gender equality issues, and promotes actions to accelerate gender parity. It's a day to celebrate women's contributions to society and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable world. For me, it’s a time to recognise the special women in our lives; that I’m proud of, in awe of, and grateful for because women doing amazing things."

Michaela P: "It's a celebration of resilience, strength, and solidarity. By commemorating this day, we honor the triumphs of women worldwide, amplify their voices, and inspire future generations to dream without boundaries."

What drew you to a career in real estate?

Lisa: "The opportunity to carve out a successful career with an innovative brand in Place and build wealth in real estate."

Mikaela I: "I was drawn to Real Estate as I have always loved looking at beautiful homes. As a child mum would take me to Saturday open homes which is when I got my first taste of the job. I liked the flexibility to create your own hours, work as hard or as little as you like and the ability to structure my work to allow me to have children and be a working mum in the future if I wanted."

Lauren: "I’ve always held an appreciation for Real Estate. I moved to Brisbane when I was 17 for university and used to drive past the Pink Mansion on Wynnum Road every day. I remember dreaming that one day I would live on the river! My passion for real estate developed further when working with my then-husband flipping houses, splitting blocks, and building new ones. It was an exciting time but a lot of work as we both also had full-time jobs. I then met Sarah and Damian Hackett after purchasing a house through them in Bulimba. I thought Sarah Hackett was such an incredible businesswoman, so driven and hard-working yet always so polite and great to work with."

How has working in real estate given you as a female, opportunity for greater economic inclusion?

Lisa Peruzza: "Real estate is a merit-based industry where success is measured by performance rather than gender. This means that regardless of my gender if I work hard and excel in my role, I can achieve financial success and recognition."

Mikaela I: "Working in real estate has provided me with an incredible career that has set me up financially for the future. There is no cap on your income or division between males and females in the industry. Many of the top-performing agents at Place are also females, which sets a great example for the younger agents that anything is possible if you work hard!"

Lauren: Before moving into the real estate industry over 8 years ago, I was working in a corporate environment where I couldn't see any further progression or an opportunity to earn more than I was. It was a very male-dominated environment in upper management and felt that there were always 'jobs for the boys' or a strong 'boys club' nature. On the contrary, I feel there are no gender boundaries in the Real estate industry. Women in particular can be highly successful; it is a juggling act with long hours and a lot of hard work. In becoming an established agent, there is room for flexibility when you are working for yourself.”

How does the real estate industry foster an environment for women to build their capabilities and strengthen their capacity to lead?

Lisa: The industry provides numerous opportunities for women to develop and showcase their leadership skills. Real estate requires a diverse range of skills, including negotiation, communication, problem-solving, and strategic thinking. Women often excel in these areas, which enables them to thrive in various roles within the industry.”

Mikaela I:Real Estate fosters an incredible environment for women to build their capabilities as leaders. Real Estate has helped build my self-confidence and has provided me with leadership skills I don’t believe I would’ve obtained in other industries.”

Advice you would pass on to other women considering a career in real estate?

Lisa:  Educate Yourself: "Take the time to learn about the various aspects of the real estate industry, including sales, leasing, property management, investment etc. Invest in relevant education, training, and certifications to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills."

Network: "Attend networking events, join industry associations, and seek out mentors who can provide guidance and support as you navigate your career path."

Be Confident: "Don't be afraid to speak up, take on challenges, and pursue opportunities for growth."

Develop Your Personal Brand: "Build a strong personal brand that reflects your expertise, professionalism, and authenticity."

Stay Flexible: "Real estate is a dynamic industry that requires adaptability and flexibility. Be open to exploring different roles, markets, and opportunities to find what aligns best with your skills and interests."

"And finally, GO FOR IT, it’s a rewarding career, with no ceiling on what you can achieve or earn."

Mikaela I: "If you are looking for a career that keeps you excited, pushes you to work hard, and provides diary flexibility, Real Estate is absolutely a career worth considering."

Lauren: "If I were to give anyone advice on entering the Real Estate Industry, it would be: start, don't put it off.  I regret not starting earlier than I did. Surround yourself with like-minded team players that will elevate your success not distract you from it.  Get as much exposure and experience from other agents as possible.  If you are offered training never miss it!"

Amy: "IWD highlights the achievements of women, raises awareness about gender equality issues, and promotes actions to accelerate gender parity. It's a day to celebrate women's contributions to society and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable world. For me, it’s a time to recognise the special women in our lives; that I’m proud of, in awe of, grateful for because women doing amazing things."
