From Fired to First Place: Aaron Woolard’s Journey to Building a High-Performance Team

Not every top performer has a perfect start. For Aaron Woolard, the road to the number one spot at Place’s Annual Awards included a setback most agents would rather forget.

Aaron’s real estate career began at a small independent agency, but it was not the start he had hoped for. He was fired from that first job, one of several setbacks that would go on to shape the agent he became. His next move brought him to Place New Farm, where much of his education came from watching established agents at work, observing how they ran their days, spoke with clients and built their businesses.

For years, Aaron operated as an individual agent, supported by administrators but without the broader team structure that would later become central to his business. The turning point came when he realised he simply could not do everything himself. Building a team and surrounding himself with the right support system became the next step, with the Place model and Josh Phegan’s approach both influencing how he thought about growth.

Today, Aaron’s leadership is built on trust. Rather than a structure that revolves around one agent, his focus is on creating a team where everyone can benefit from each other, and where individual wins lift the people around them.

That long-term view extends to how he sees the industry as a whole. Aaron is clear that building a sustainable business takes time, and that real estate should be treated as a five-to-ten-year plan rather than a quick win. It’s a mindset that runs against the pressure many new agents feel to prove themselves early, and one that ultimately saw him take out the top honour at The Celebration this year.

Tune in to hear Aaron’s full story, from an early setback to the number one spot, and what it takes to reach the top while bringing others along with you.
